Portland was founded in the 1830's, which makes it the oldest town in Victoria. It once was a base for whaling, but now the town thrives on the aluminium production. It still has over 200 well maintained heritage buildings, giving the town a pleasant old feel. You can visit a few museums on Portlands history, and learn about the early settling days.
Talk a walk around the still thriving harbour and smell the sea. The harbour is also a great place for recreational fishing. Most areas of the port are accesible to recreational fishermen, including the Lee Breakwater wharf, that stretches into open water for 1 km. The industrial areas are not open to the public because of the heavy traffic and custom regulations, but guided tours are available.
