Sosua is a very beautiful tourist attraction. There are good hotels in town. By the beach known as 'the strip', there are also many little vendors. They´ll try to sell you gems and souveniers, but do not be afraid to start bartering at a very low price. If you´re an unexperience traveller, you might end up writing the following (which I did):"Avoid Sosua. There is not much to see here, and the people are trained in taking your dollars. They will sell their body, they will give you in to the police while you buy their marihuana, they will take you on boring tours on their motorcycle and overcharge you by a factor 20...
This is what happens when you put too much tourist resorts in a small, poor village. Just walk on by."
In fact you should just know in advance what you can expect, and try to get to know prices in advance. Taxidrivers and motoconcho´s will try to overcharge you enormously.
Added: Or on the other hand you could stay on the other end of Sosua, away from the more expensive touristy hotels, in the Dominican section. I stayed there for 8 days for $64 and had a great time. A blonde American woman alone, speaking minimal Spanish, I will add. And I had hot water. I was across from a bakery, just up the hill from the beach, and maybe a five minute walk from the tourist spots. There is not a ton to see, but it is nice to go to the beach and relax for CHEAP!
True, there is a lot of prostitution in these north coast beach towns, but the thing about Sosua is that the prostitutes here are mostly men, called "sanky pankys" and they will generally spend a length of time with an older female tourist (French and German, usually). It is interesting to see, and for some reason less disturbing than young beautiful women with old fat men!
