A Spanish proverb says: 'Do nothing, then rest.' This describes the atmosphere in the small fishing village of Grundarfjordur perfectly, yet the town is right in the middle of the magical Snæfellsnes Peninsula which makes it an ideal stopover from which to explore surrounding towns and points of interest. The legendary Snæfellsjökull glacier is only 20 minutes west, and the ferry to the West Fjords is 45 minutes to the east.

As members of the Icelandic and International Youth Hostel Associations, the owners, Johanna and Johnny, pride themselves on keeping a neat and pleasant hostel. The hostel itself is located in one of the oldest houses in town, a mere 150 metres from the local swimming pool. It has 23 beds, 2 kitchens, 2 bathrooms and a TV-room and makes use of the fastest high-speed internet connection available in Iceland today. Breakfast and bed linen are available for a small extra fee that is not included in the price.

Despite the relaxed atmosphere there is a multitude of activities and services available. Other than strolling around and watching the boats land fish at the harbour, visitors can go golfing on one of the finest 9-hole golf courses in the country, horse-riding, bicycling, kayaking, hiking, fishing, mountain-climbing, scree-running and swimming, or just hang out in the hostel garden with a cold drink and enjoy the all-night summer sun.

Johanna and Johnny can assist in arranging any or all of these activities. There are also snowmobiling and whale watching tours available in surrounding areas.

Services in Grundarfjordur include two banks (including cash dispensers), a small supermarket, Esso petrol and service station (also the local bus stop), a state alcohol shop, garage and tyre service, Detours Travel Service, swimming pool and badminton/basketball/football courts as well as a 9-hole golf course nearby. We also have a small museum and information centre, designed and still in the process of being built up by local historian Ingi Hans Jónsson.

For those craving a taste of Icelandic cuisine and a memorable evening out, you won't find better than the lamb and fish at the legendary local Krákan restaurant. Also available is pizza, burgers and salads at Kaffi 59 or country gourmet at at Hotel Framnes. Hostel guests receive vouchers for 10% discount at all three the above eateries. (Mind you walk-ins, Hotel Framnes only serves supper in summer!)

Welcome to Grundarfjordur!
