Pontevedra is the capital of the province of the same name, that contains the much larger city of Vigo. This is one of the four provinces in Galicia. Connoiseurs often rate it as the most impressive place in southern Galicia.

Although it has no mega-site like the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, the old part of the city is immensely pleasing and few things can beat eating hot chestnuts in  the square caleed Herreria, with the pilgrim church of Capilla Peregrina and other fine buildings all around you when the dusk is coming.

There are sundry lovely squares hidden along the narrow twisting roads of the old town which contain dozens of tiny bars selling octopus, [pulperias.] If you have not tried octopus, you will be pushed to find anywhere better to give it a try.
