  • Galicia Travel Guide & City Information

Galicia is the area covered by the far north-west of Spain. It is bi-lingual though its language is by no means as popular as Catalan in the north-east. Gales is related to Portuguese but is perhaps most noted for its profusion of 'x's in place names. The O and A forms of the definite article are also found in place names.

It is a beautiful area where the coast is unspoilt - building being mainly homes for Galicians returning from 'exile' after making a bit of cash. However it is not a coincidence that it is not developed for tourism like the well known Costas of other parts. Along with other parts of north Spain which lie west of France, Galicia has a climate which it takes from the Atlantic and it's distinctly dodgy.

The largest city is Vigo and the most popular is probably Santiago de Compostela but the provincial capital of Pontevedra shouln't be missed and A Coruña in the north is a fine city.

Much of the inland scenery is mountainous and the rivers are delightful.
