Franeker is located in the north of Friesland. It houses one unique site which is worth the detour: the planetary of Eise Eisinga, a 17-th century scholar who built a complete planetary in his living room. His wife didn't quite like it, though.

A great time to visit is when the PC (Permamente Commissie) is held, a Kaatsen (local sport, sort of hand tennis), on the fifth wednesday after the last day of june. The tonw is full of aficionados of the sport.
