This area includes much of the plains located to the south of the city and to the north of the Po River. Veronas lowlands are traveled by the Adige River and have a whole network of watercourses that are a precious source of water for farming in this which is one of Italys most well developed and modern agricultural zones. The area also has large towns with historic, handcrafting (period style furniture) and industrial importance. Its delicate and poetic landscape should not be overlooked, especially during Autumn when quiet melancholy leads us to ancestral love for our lands and to the mistery of passing season and traditional folklore.



The area called Basso Veronese is rich in history, as the presence of numerous castles demonstrates. Starting-point of this route is Nogarole Rocca, whose castle was burnt in 1233 and rebuilt by Lotario II. A little farther on you come to Isola Della Scala: here the old castle (1011) was destroyed in 1230 and later rebuilt. Continuing eastwards you reach Salizzole, where a mighty castle (early XII. Cent.) stands. The romanic church El Ceson in San Pietro in Valle is also worth visiting: the bell-tower reminds us of a castle tower. In Sanguinetto you must visit the charming scaliger castle: in 1377 it was given to commander Dal Verme by the Scaligerfamily. Still in good condition it is used today as the town hall, theatre and library. In Legnago there is only a tower left of the ancient magnificence of the city: in 1200 one of the finest caslte in the area stood on this site. A few kilometers from here you can see the castle of Bevilacqua, which was already famous in 1336 as a fortress and is well preserved. From Bevilacqua you can easily reach Montagnana, one of the most charming fortified towns in Italy, with its 1950 m. long walls and 24 towers. The town is also famous for the Palio of the 12 Paduan Comunes, which takes place every year on 1. sunday in September.
