Passage West (as opposed to Passage East in Waterford) was once a major sea port and the main point of embarkation for emigrants to America. Indeed, the first steam powered crossing of the Atlantic in the world ever was by the Sirius, which left from Passage with a local captain. The drive shaft of the Sirius is on display in the middle town. There is still an active docks in the town to this day. There is no reason for the tourist to visit Passage but it is a town you pass through on the way to the cross river ferry which is a handy way of getting to Cobh. Bizarrely for such a small place it has 9 public houses although some of them are deep in Deliverance territory.
