I was in Avalon hostel last year and I have a good impression about the place. Location - It is in the centre of the city (10 min. walk from Trinity college) and close to many interesting places, but a bit far from the train station (20 min. walk). Rooms - The access to the rooms is given only to people with a magnetic card delivered when you check in. The Hostel is like an apartment building, with elevator. They have several types of rooms: some with few beds (more expensive) and at least a big room with more than 25 beds (cheaper, used by girls and boys). Facilities - They have a common deposit where you can leave your belongings, openened during fixed period through the day. They also have a kind of restaurant where small meals are served (the restaurant can be used by people from outside the hostel). Invonvenients - The Hostel is always very crowded in the summer and it is a good idea to book in advance, or during early morning (when many people is leaving).
I stayed at the Avalon House last year. Its pretty much a standard hostel with a little cafe in the front. It will probably be full of Let's Go readers, but let me tell you once I stayed in a non-Let's Go Hostel and it was awful. There was no one there!! At least you'll meet other people. But back to the topic, I stayed there when I arrived in Dublin and it was packed. Then I stayed there when I had to catch a plane out of Dublin the next week and there were only 2 people in my room. In any case, I'm sure you'll be fine.
