Giessen is a more than 850-years old city in the middle of Hessen, between Frankfurt and Marburg. It is located on the River Lahn and has more than 73.000 inhabitants. Though the inner city was destroyed in World War 2, there are a few beautiful Sites as the Burgmannenhaus, The Old Castle and the Zeughaus.
Giessen is characterized by its University, the second oldest and second largest in Hesse. With more than 28.000 students the city has the highest student density in Germany. Famous Scientists like Roentgen and Liebig worked here in the 19th century. The exploration of science has tradition: the Liebig Museum in the original laboratory and the Mathematikum, a hands-on museum, invite the visitors until today.
The surrounding Region Middle Hassia has a strong nature attitude: green highlands with picturesque castles are connected by hiking routes. Canoeing on the River Lahn is very popular.
