These gardens were literally lost, after supplying all the food needs of the big house and a large amount of pleasure for many years. The gardeners left to serve in WW1 and did not return. The story of the reclamation of the gardens is told by a book entitled 'The Lost Gardens of Heligan,' prior reading of which contributes much to the enjoyment of a visit.

There are pleasure gardens, veg, gardens and an area aptly called 'the Jungle.' There is also a lovely walk along the adjacent valley and the home farm has been opened up for visits more recently.
