Lancaster is quite an historic town, its main sight being the Lancaster Castle, one of the longest serving prisons in Europe. The town centre is for the pedestrians and offers, besides shops and a fish market, some interesting sights, such as the Roman Bath-House and the St Peters Roman Cathedral. The 200 year old Lancaster canal finds it way throughout the city and offers some excellent waterside pubs.
The area itself boasts many festivals and Lancaster is only one of the many places where the events take place, whether part of the Lancaster university scheme or not. From Lancaster, its only a short drive to the famous Lake District or the Yorkshire Dales.
