The Cotswolds are an area of gentle hills with stone walls criss-crossing the landscape, hidden river valleys and distinctive market towns and villages made of the famous honey coloured Cotswold stone. Towns such as Winchcombe, Bibury and Painswick have a timeless charm that fascinates visitors from all over the world. In summer they some of the villages can be overcrowded with tourists. If you want to be on your own, avoid Bourton-on-the-Water for example. The best way to enjoy the beauty of the region is to bring some hiking gear and hike your way from one village to the other.
This part of Gloucestershire includes world-famous historic houses and gardens such as those at Hidcote Manor, Painswick, Westonbirt Arboretum and Sudeley Castle, home of Henry VIII's last Queen.
