This small town was one of the earlier places on Dartmoor to have tourists coming, perhaps because it was on the east side and therefore reachable without having to undergo travel in the appalling Dartmor mists. Earlier still it was one of the Stannary towns. These towns, based on tin mining, had their own laws and courts!

It's area is wild and spectacular with excellent Bronze Age remains.
