Mandø is a small island off the coast of Denmark, near Ribe. It is probably one of Denmark´s most peaceful islands and therefore bears little resemblance to the other holiday islands of the Wadden Sea. Mandø has been allowed to remain almost untouched by

tourism because at high water there is no route connecting it to the mainland.



Mandø is the only island in the Danish part of the Wadden Sea protected by a dyke stretching almost the whole way round its 8 km of coastline. One single range of dunes at the highest point of the island protects Mandø village from the sea to the west.



The first mention of Mandø is from 1231 when it was owned by the king. However, in 1741 the inhabitants bought the island at an auction. At that time shipping was the principle occupation of the men of the island while the women took care of agriculture. In 1890 the population was 262; today it is only 70.
