Nagorno-Karabakh is a mountainous region in Azerbaijan under Armenian administration with an Armenian population. Following years of tension and sporadic fighting, full scale war erupted in 1991 between Armenians and Azeris in and around Karabakh. In 1994 a cease-fire was signed. Armenians remain in control of Karabakh and territories surrounding the region, representing close to 20 percent of the territory of Azerbaijan.
Since the cease fire it is possible to travel here but is NK is still far from being a normal tourist destination. Stepanakert the capital and Shoushi are the most important cities.
