Soppong is a small traditional market village situated on small river, about 75 km from Mae Hong Son. Residents are mostly Shan and hilltribe, with few tourists populating the village, as has become the case with nearby Pai. It is a popular stop for day trips from the provincial capital, and has become known as a "wilderness adventure centre". Besides the village experience you can explore hilltribe villages on foot, explore the many caves in the area, birding and experience some very lush, native jungle. Weather is quite cool, given the 750 metre elevation and the surrounding mountains. There are several quiet accomodations located along the river, including Soppong River Inn and T-Rex House. Market day is Tuesday, with many of the local hilltribe people coming down to the village to trade their wares.
