The people, modern cities, ancient temples, the high peaks of the Himalayas, the holy Ganges, the deserts of Rajastan, the Backwaters of Kerala there is more than enough to see and do for one lifetime.
Maybe this will be your first and final visit or maybe this will be the beginning of a never ending passionate relationship with this dazzling subcontinent. Whatever the case will be, you will never forget India for as long as you live.
Arabian nights revive in colourful Rajasthan
Most people begin at Delhi and set off for one of the well-known routes. After a visit to the general and the ghost town of Fathehpur Sikri, Rajasthan offers an inspiring combination of famous palaces, such as the general, fascinating cities such as Udaipur and Jodhpur t Abu. An absolute must is a visit to the colourful general and, if it suits you, finish it off with a camel-ride leaving from the Thar desert town of Jaisalmer.
Snow-capped mountains eclipsing tea plantations and erotic carvings
The eastern track leads for many visitors to the tea plantations in Darjeeling or the neighbouring country Nepal. A logical stop on the way is the temple complex of Khajuraho with its erotic carvings. After that, the holy city of Varanasi will give a deeper insight into the importance of Hinduism in India.
For those interested in snow, mountains and trekkings, the northern area offers plenty of opportunities. Although the general area often still is the sight of political struggle, this is the gateway to the general and places such as Manali, Ladakh and little Tibet, better known as Leh.
Lushy green fields entangled with architectural masterpieces and a freaky beach centre
The southern part offers the green regions of Karnataka and Kerala and the historically interesting state of Tamil Nadu. Whether you leave the capital Chennai for the temple complex at the sandelwood city Mysore or the rock temples at Mahabalipuram, there is always a marvellous beach somewhere where you can catch your breath again, such as the beaches at Kollam and Varkala.
Indias most famous beach area is on the west coast, the old freaky hippy centre of Goa. From there, you can explore the old ghost town of Hampi. Although many people fly in on Goa these days, it can also be reached from the thriving metropolis Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra. From Mumbai, the Daytrips is an obligatory stop. Hyderabad in the Andra Pradesh is an impressive sight of Hindus and Muslims living together. And these are only a few of the options.
There is too much to see in India to speak of in this brief introduction. In order to make the information more easily accessible, we have divided India in regions according to the 25 states of India. Check out the different states for the most interesting places and set out on a trip that gives you a touch of everything for the time being and be willing to accept your defeat: youll have to come back to India.
