Kandahar doesn't see a lot of tourists. The city is located in the south of Afghanistan, and is considered the powerbase of the Taliban. It was the first city the religious students conquered and it was from here that they launched their military campaign against the rest of the country.
Needless to say that Kandahar is not an easygoing place. It is a strict as it gets with respect to the application of islamic rules and guidelines and foreign ideas are not paricularly welcome. Neither are foreigners - unless they are strict Sunni muslims too.
The main attraction of the town is the shroud of the Propher which is kept somewhere far away from the eyes of the public. Omar, the leader of the Taliban wore it when he proclaimed himself Emir of Afghanistan. Before that it was last used in 1936 to end a TBC epedemic. But you should'nt count on seeing it.
The other attraction you won't see is Omar. He is rarely seen in public but seems be around in Kandahar pretty often.
